Carola Spadoni a filmmaker and visual artist born in 1969 in Roma lives in Berlin. Her work deals with moving images, narration, intersectional theory and practices, institutional critique, and it’s mostly aimed towards installation based outcomes and drawings.
She studied film at Brooklyn College in New York, where she lived throughout the nineties. She wrote, directed and produced a feature film, documentaries, shorts and music videos. Since the early 2000s, the research within the cinematic language brought her work towards film and video installation, consequently showing in galleries and museums. In 2003 is among the winners of the Young Italian Art Prize given by the PARC (Office of the Ministry of Culture), for which she participated in the 50th Venice Art Biennal. Her work is in private and public collections among which the MAXXI museum of contemporary art in Roma.
Her filmmaking and cultural activist practice is also expressed through writing, with the column ‘Peregrine on the rocks’ for the cultural weekly Alias of il manifesto (IT), and for The Independent Film & Video (U.S.), il manifesto (IT), Rolling Stone Italia. As well as the curatorial work for screening series of independent film and contemporary art videos, lecturing in universities, participating in symposia and teaching workshops.
Most recent curated screening is 'Reality and cinema: frammenti di un discorso amoroso' for the Filmmaker's Choice series at the Arsenal in Berlin.
She taught in the M.A. Multimedia Arts & Design at the Rufa academy in Roma in 2018 and in the graduate Film program of the ICS in Roma in 2004/5.
Festivals, screening series and broadcast on tv include the 52nd Berlinale (Forum section), the Chicago International Film Festival, Torino Film Festival, Bombay Int’l FF, Anthology Film Archives, the Italian cinemateque Sala Trevi. Channel 4(U.K.), Rai 3, tele+(Italy), R.t.s.i. (Switzerland). Commissioned work's institutions include il Teatro di Roma, Rai Radio 3, il Comune di Roma, Enzimi, Netmage, Xing.
Recent awards include the Italian Council 9 and the Stipendien Sonderprogramm der Senatsverwaltung für Kultur und Europa (2020).
